Urban&Civic has a range of interesting and innovative sustainability initiatives in action on our sites.
One of these comes from Middlebeck, where contractors ECL Civil Engineering, began using a solar-powered generator as part of their works to construct part of the new Southern Link Road for Newark. This will allow ECL to use solar power to optimise their energy usage and ultimately significantly reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs associated with the project.
In practice, this has already brought a saving of approximately 8,000 litres of diesel between September 2023 and March 2024 - the equivalent of driving around the world 2 ½ times, or powering a typical household for over 6 months! As for the solar panel performance, the panels were online 65% of the time, ensuring consistent energy generation.
Our supply chain are essential to help us meet our Net Zero carbon targets, so being able to see initiatives such as this is really positive.
While financial savings are crucial, the focus for us was the environmental impact. Our solar panels not only reduce expenses but also significantly cut down on carbon emissions, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability.
